Common Tihai Forms in Tintal

(about the Common Tihai Forms)

Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai

(about the Damdar Tihai)

  • Length of tihai = 17 (1 avartan plus sam)
  • Length of repetition = 5
  • Length of pause = 1 (x2 = 2)

Math: 5 x 3 = 15 + 2 = 17

Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai Structure:

Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai Example:

With a 5-matra phrase (repetition) in dugun (2 bols per matra): tete kata gadi gana dha

More Damdar Tihai Examples:

All of the tintal kaydas, bants, and relas on this website include a damdar tihai in their variations.

Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai

(about the Bedam Tihai)

  • Length of tihai = 17 (1 avartan plus sam)
  • Length of repetition = 5.5
  • Length of pause = 0

Math: 5.5 x 3 = 16.5 (finishes on 17)

Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai Structure:

Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai Example:

With a 5.5-matra phrase in dugun (2 bols per matra): dhage tete kata gadi gana dha

This math is a little confusing. And people may calculate it in different ways. Technically, the first repetition ends on the beginning of the 6th matra. But it does not last a full 6 matras (only 5.5), because the next repetition begins on 6.5 (the upbeat of matra 6).

So the total of the three repetitions is 16.5, which includes the beginning of matra 17 (sam of the next avartan). The final dha can then be extended an extra half-matra to equal 17.

Performing this tihai is easier than understanding the math. Just play any 6-matra phrase, then start the next repetition on the upbeat of the 6th matra, and then play the last repetition on the downbeat again.

Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka/Chakradar Tihai

(about the Nauhakka Tihai)

  • Length of tihai = 17 (1 avartan plus sam)
  • Length of repetition = 1.75 matras or 7 quarter-matras (played 9 times)
  • Length of pause = .25 matras or 1 quarter-matra (between each group of 3: x2 = .5 matra or 2 quarter-matras)

Math in matras: 1.75 x 9 = 15.75 + .5 = 16.25 (finishes on 17)

Math in quarter-matras: 7 x 9 = 63 + 2 = 65 (16.25 matras)

(Note: Because all 9 repetitions are not evenly spaced, some may call this a chakradar tihai.)

Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai Structure (in quarter-matras):

Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai Example:

With a 7 quarter-matra phrase (repetition) in chaugun (4 bols per matra): ka te te gi na ti dha

(from Benares Nauhakka 1)

Whether you define this form as a nauhakka or a chakradar, it is easiest to think of it as a chakradar tihai. This kind of chakradar tihai is simply a tihai played 3 times (with no mukhra, or opening).

This particular nauhakka has a short pause between each tihai (each group of 3), but no pause within each tihai. This gives us the feeling of 3 groups of 3 when we play, or listen, to this form. So in this case, it makes sense to show each group of 3 in brackets: "[ ]".

About the Math

Because this nauhakka is made from a 1.75-matra phrase (7 quarter-matras), it may be easier to calculate if you think of it as a 7-stroke phrase played 9 times. We can then do the math in quarter-matras: 16 matras = 64 quarter-matras. We then need 65 to finish on 17 (sam).

Each repetition of 7 is played in three groups of three for a total of 9 times (7 x 9 = 63). Between each group of three, there is a quarter-matra pause (total = 2). So, 7 x 9 = 63 + 2 = 65.

Finally—if you are not confused already—notice that each group of three, including the gap, has the same length as the repetition in the sam-to-sam bedam tihai above: 5.5 matras. So the two have the same basic structure.

14-Matra Nauhakka

(about the Nauhakka Tihai)

  • Length of tihai = 14 (starting from matra 4 of tintal)
  • Length of repetition = 1.5 (played 9 times)
  • Length of pause = 0

Math: 1.5 x 9 = 13.5 (finishes on 14)

This is a “pure” nauhakka, made from 9 repetitions which are all equally spaced.

14-Matra Nauhakka Tihai Structure:

14-Matra Nauhakka Tihai Example:

With a 1.5 matra phrase (repetition) in chaugun (4 bols per matra): ghinatete dha–

(from Benares Nauhakka 4)

Although each repetition above is written as "(1 2)", it is not a full 2 matras. Each repetition is only 1.5 matras because the next repetition immediately begins only a half-matra later. So the 9 repetitions alternate between starting on the matra, and then starting on the up-beat.

Simple Chakradar

(about the Simple Chakradar)

  • Length of chakradar: 33 (2 avartans plus sam)
  • Length of repetition: 11
  • Length of mukhra: 2
  • Length of tihai: 9 (3 x 3)
  • Length of pause between repetitions: 0

In chakradar tihai forms, each repetition has both a mukhra ("opening" or "introduction") and a tihai. So we have to do the math for the overall chakradar, for the mukhra-tihai division of the repetition, and for the repetition’s tihai.

Math:

  • Overall Chakradar Math: 11 x 3 = 33
  • Repetition Math: 2 (mukhra) + 9 (tihai) = 11
  • Tihai Math: 3 x 3 = 9

  • Length of main repetition: 27
  • Length of mukhra: 16
  • Length of tihai: 11 (3.5 x 3 = 10.5/11)
  • Length of pause between tihai repetitions: 0

Math:

  • Overall Chakradar Math: 27 x 3 = 81
  • Repetition Math: 16 (mukhra) + 11 (tihai) = 27
  • Tihai Math: 3.5 x 3 = 10.5 (finishes on 11)
