Below are some of the most common tihai and chakradar forms in rupak tal. The examples use mostly the same bols (phrases) to make the forms easier to understand and compare.
Remember that there are many variations of these forms, and different ways of interpreting them. There are also many other forms not listed here. See the linked descriptions and examples for more information about individual forms.
Rupak Tal Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai
- Length of tihai = 15 (2 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 5
- Length of pause = 0
Math: 5 x 3 = 15

Rupak Tal Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai
- Length of tihai = 8 (1 avartan plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 2.5
- Length of pause = 0
Math: 2.5 x 3 = 7.5 ( finishes on 8)
Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai–1 Structure:
Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai Example:
Notice that this is the same tihai as the first tihai above, but it is played at twice the speed: 4:1 instead of 2:1. At this speed it is considered bedam.
More Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai Examples:
All of the rupak kaydas and bants on this site include this kind of tihai in their variations, but most must be played at double the written speed to make them bedam.
Rupak Tal Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka/Chakradar Tihai–1 (2 avartans)
- Length of tihai = 15 (2 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 1.5
- Length of pause = .5 (between each group of 3: x2 = 1)
Math: 1.5 x 9 = 13.5 + 1 = 14.5 (finishes on 15)
(Note: Because all 9 repetitions are not evenly spaced, some may call this a chakradar tihai.)

Rupak Tal Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai–2 (3 avartans)
- Length of tihai = 22 (3 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 1.5
- Length of pause = 1 (x8 = 8)
Math in matras: 1.5 x 9 = 13.5 + 8 = 21.5 (finishes on 22)

Rupak Tal Simple Chakradar
- Length of chakradar: 29 (4 avartans plus sam)
- Length of repetition: 9.5
- Length of mukhra: 2
- Length of tihai: 7.5
- Length of tihai phrase: 2.5
- Length of pause between repetitions: 0
In chakradar tihai forms, each repetition has both a mukhra (opening) plus a tihai. So we have to do the math for the overall chakradar, for the mukhra-tihai division of the repetition, and for the repetition’s tihai.
Math:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 9.5 x 3 = 28.5 (finishes on 29)
- Repetition Math: 2 (mukhra) + 7.5 (tihai) = 9.5
- Tihai Math: 2.5 x 3 = 7.5
Simple Chakradar Structure:
Simple Chakradar Example:
Simple Chakradar Example 2 (8 avartans)
The Simple Chakradar form in rupak is often double the length of the form above (8 avartans instead of 4). This is a very popular version because the main repetition is 19 matras instead of 9.5, which also can be used in ektal and tintal.
Math for 8-avartan version of Simple Chakradar:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 19 x 3 = 57
- Repetition Math: 4 (mukhra) + 15 (tihai) = 19
- Tihai Math: 5 x 3 = 15
More Simple Chakradar Examples:
- Benares Bant 1
- Rupak Chakradar Tukras 1–4 (These are the 8-avartan versions of the Simple Chakradar; note that some of these have a different internal structure, but all have the 19-matra repetition.)
Rupak Tal Sadharan Chakradar–1 (5 avartans)
(about the Tintal Sadharan Chakradar)
- Length of chakradar: 36 (5 avartans plus sam)
- Length of repetition: 12
- Length of mukhra: 2
- Length of tihai: 10
- Length of tihai phrase: 3
- Length of pause between tihai phrases: .5 (x2 = 1)
- Length of pause between repetitions: 0
Math:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 12 x 3 = 36
- Repetition Math: 2 (mukhra) + 10 (tihai) = 12
- Tihai Math: 3 x 3 = 9 + 1 = 10
Sadharan Chakradar–1 Structure:
Sadharan Chakradar–1 Example:
Rupak Tal Sadharan Chakradar–2 (6 avartans)
(about the Tintal Sadharan Chakradar)
- Length of chakradar: 43 (6 avartans plus sam)
- Length of repetition: 13.5 (14 with gap)
- Length of mukhra: 6
- Length of tihai: 7.5 (8 with gap)
- Length of tihai phrase: 2.5
- Length of pause between repetitions: 1 (x2 = 2)
Math:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 13.5 x 3 = 40.5 + 2 = 42.5 (finishes on 43)
- Repetition Math: 6 (mukhra) + 7.5 (tihai) = 13.5
- Tihai Math: 2.5 x 3 = 7.5
This math can be a little confusing with all the uneven numbers (13.5, 7.5, 2.5). An easier way to calculate is to include half of the gap (.5) at the end of each repetition. Then the length of the repetition becomes 14, the length of the tihai becomes 8, and the length of pause between repetitions becomes 1 total. This makes the math easier to remember:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 14 x 3 = 42 + 1 = 43
- Repetition Math: 6 (mukhra) + 8 (tihai) = 14
- Tihai Math: 2.5 x 3 = 7.5 + .5 (added gap at end) = 8

- Length of repetition: 12
- Length of mukhra: 6
- Length of tihai: 6
- Length of tihai phrase: 2
- Length of pause between repetitions: 0
Math:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 12 x 3 = 36
- Repetition Math: 6 (mukhra) + 6 (tihai) = 12
- Tihai Math: 2 x 3 = 6
Farmaishi Chakradar–1 Structure:

- Length of repetition: 16
- Length of mukhra: 4
- Length of tihai: 12
- Length of tihai phrase: 4
- Length of pause between repetitions: 1 (x2 = 2)
Math:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 16 x 3 = 48 + 2 = 50
- Repetition Math: 4 (mukhra) + 12 (tihai) = 16
- Tihai Math: 4 x 3 = 12
