About the Solo
The recording below is a short solo of Benares Kayda 1, performed in the traditional style with variations and a simple tihai. There is both an audio-only version, and a video version with a visual guide.
The visual guide shows the written bols while they are played. For both students and listeners, it is best if you are already familiar with the Benares Kayda 1 variations before listening.
The accompaniment lahra (melody) is in the well-known rag Kirwani. If you are new to Indian music, it will be easier to follow if you are already familiar with a few common lahra melodies, and you understand how the lahra outlines the tal.
The lahra for this recording is computer-generated (MIDI) using a sampled santoor. Although this is not traditional, and live lahra accompaniment is preferred, this MIDI lahra adequately recreates the traditional arrangement for listening purposes.
Solo Sequence:
- Tintal Theka (1 round of the tal)
- Main Bol (theme) in 2x Speed (played twice)
- Main Bol in 4x Speed (played four times)
- Variations 1-10 in order (each played twice)
- Main Bol (twice) + Tihai
(Notice that the solo has most, but not all, of the variations given in the Variations Section.)
