Ektal Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–1
- Length of tihai = 13 (1 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 3
- Length of pause = 2 (x2 = 4)
Math: 3 x 3 = 9 + 4 = 13
Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–1 Structure:
Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–1 Example:
Ektal Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–2
- Length of tihai = 13 (1 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 3.5
- Length of pause = 1 (x2 = 2)
Math: 3.5 x 3 = 10.5 + 2 = 12.5 (finishes on 13)
Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–2 Structure:
Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–2 Example:
Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–2 Example 2 (2 avartans):
This tihai can also be performed at double the length of the form above (2 avartans instead of 1). The total length is now 25 matras, the main repetition is 7 matras, and the pause is 2 matras.
Math for 2-avartan Sam-to-Sam Tihai–2: 3 x 7 = 21 + 4 = 25
More Sam-to-Sam Damdar Tihai–2 Examples
- Ektal-Benares Kaydas 1–4 all have this tihai in their variations, including both versions (1 and 2 avartans).
- Ektal-Benares Bants 1 (1-avartan version)
- Ektal-Benares Bants 2 (2-avartan version)
Ektal Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai
- Length of tihai = 13 (1 avartan plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 3.75 matras or 15 quarter-matras
- Length of pause = .5 matras or 2 quarter matras (x2 = 1 matra or 4 quarter-matras)
Math in matras: 3.75 x 3 = 11.25 + 1 = 12.25 ( finishes on 13)
Math in quarter-matras: 15 x 3 = 45 + 4 = 49 (/4 = 12.25 matras)
Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai Structure:
Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai Example:
Because this tihai is made from a 3.75-matra phrase (15 quarter-matras), it may be easier to calculate if you think of it as a 15-stroke phrase played 3 times. To do the math in quarter-matras, we have to divide each matra into quarters: 12 matras = 48 quarter-matras. We then need 49 to finish on 13 (sam).
So the math in quarter-matras is 15 x 3 = 45 + 4 (total pauses) = 49.
Ektal Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka/Chakradar Tihai–1 (1 avartan)
- Length of tihai = 13 (1 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 1.25 matras or 5 quarter-matras
- Length of pause = .5 matras or 2 quarter matras (x2 = 1 matra or 4 quarter-matras)
Math in matras: 1.25 x 9 = 11.25 + 1 = 12.25 ( finishes on 13)
Math in quarter-matras: 5 x 9 = 45 + 4 = 49 (/4 = 12.25 matras)
Notice that each group of 3 repetitions totals 3.75 matras, which is the same length as the main repetition in the Sam-to-Sam Bedam Tihai above.
(Note: Because all 9 repetitions are not evenly spaced, some may call this a chakradar tihai.)
Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai–1 Structure:
Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai–1 Example:
More Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai–1 Examples:
- Ektal-Benares Nauhakkas 1–3 all have this form. Note that Nauhakka 1 is in aralay (3:1) and so each matra is divided into thirds, not quarters, so the math is slightly different. Also, Nauhakkas 1 and 3 each include gaps at the end of each phrase, but they are the same basic form.
Ektal Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka/Chakradar Tihai–2 (4 avartans)
- Length of tihai = 49 (4 avartans plus sam)
- Length of phrase = 5
- Length of pause = 2 (between each group of 3 = 4)
Math: 5 x 9 = 45 + 4 = 49
This is actually the same form as the first nauhakka above, but is 4 times as long. This allows for more bols in each phrase and sounds best at faster lays.
Also, notice that each group of 3 repetitions totals 15 matras, which is the same length as the main repetition in the Simple Chakradar below.
(Note: Because all 9 repetitions are not evenly spaced, some may call this a chakradar tihai.)
Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai–2 Structure:
Sam-to-Sam Nauhakka Tihai–2 Example:
Ektal Simple Chakradar
- Length of chakradar: 49 (4 avartans plus sam)
- Length of repetition: 15
- Length of mukhra: 2
- Length of tihai: 12
- Length of tihai phrase: 4
- Length of pause between repetitions: 2
In chakradar tihai forms, each repetition has both a mukhra (opening) plus a tihai. So we have to do the math for the overall chakradar, for the mukhra-tihai division of the repetition, and for the repetition’s tihai.
Math:
- Overall Chakradar Math: 15 x 3 = 45 + 4 = 49
- Repetition Math: 3 (mukhra) + 12 (tihai) = 15
- Tihai Math: 4 x 3 = 12
